Spray Tan Prep & Aftercare Instructions
Spray Tan Prep Instructions
To achieve the best possible spray tan results, proper preparation is essential. Following these steps will help ensure a smooth, even, long-lasting glow.
24 Hours Before Your Appointment
- Exfoliate thoroughly using an oil-free exfoliator or exfoliating glove to remove dead skin cells and create an even surface for tanning
- Avoid oil-based sugar scrubs and moisturizing exfoliants prior to your appointment, as they may leave residue on the skin and affect spray tan development
- Pay extra attention when exfoliating dry areas such as elbows, knees, ankles, and hands to help ensure an even spray tan application
- Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your appointment to allow pores time to close
- Avoid products containing heavy oils, lotions, or moisturizers
Day of Your Appointment
Please arrive with completely clean, dry skin:
- No lotion
- No makeup
- No deodorant
- No perfume or body spray
- No oils or self-tanner residue
These products can create barriers on the skin and may affect how your spray tan develops.
Additional recommendations:
- Remove jewelry before your appointment
- Avoid applying chapstick or lip gloss immediately before your appointment
- Wear or bring dark undergarments or a swimsuit if preferred during your spray tan session
- Bring an umbrella or loose clothing if rain is expected
- Avoid sweating, workouts, or getting wet during the development period
What to Wear After Your Appointment
- Wear loose, dark clothing after your appointment
- Avoid tight leggings, bras, socks, or anything that may rub against the skin
- Flip-flops or loose shoes are recommended
Spray Tan Aftercare Instructions
Proper aftercare is key to maintaining a flawless, long-lasting spray tan.
Immediately After Your Appointment
- Keep your skin completely dry during the development period
- Avoid sweating, swimming, rain, steam rooms, and workouts
- Do not touch or rub your skin excessively
Development Time
Standard Spray Tan
- Wait 8–12 hours before your first rinse
Rapid Spray Tan
- Wait 1–3 hours before rinsing, depending on your desired depth of color and your spray tan artist’s recommendation
First Rinse
- Rinse with lukewarm water only until the cosmetic bronzer runs clear
- Do not use soap, shampoo, or body wash during the first rinse
- Pat skin dry gently with a towel — do not rub
Moisturizing & Maintaining Your Tan
- Use an oil-free moisturizer twice daily to keep skin hydrated and extend the life of your tan
- Avoid products containing heavy oils, alcohol, retinol, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
- Avoid exfoliating products, scrubs, loofahs, and long hot baths
- Avoid shaving or exfoliating immediately after your spray tan whenever possible
- Chlorine, hot tubs, pools, and excessive sweating may cause your tan to fade more quickly
Helpful Tips for Longer-Lasting Results
- Wear sunscreen outdoors
- Pat skin dry after showers instead of rubbing
- Stay hydrated to help maintain healthy skin
- Schedule regular spray tans to maintain your desired glow
