Tanning and Skincare: What You Need to Know
A gorgeous tan starts with healthy skin. At MAAC on Main in Lake View, SC, we believe that glowing skin and a beautiful bronze aren't mutually exclusive — in fact, the best tans come from the best-cared-for skin. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your skin healthy while you tan.
Why Skincare Matters When You Tan
Your skin is your largest organ, and it responds directly to how well you treat it. Dry, neglected skin:
- Tans unevenly and patchily
- Fades faster after UV or spray sessions
- Is more prone to irritation and sensitivity
- Shows premature aging more quickly
A consistent skincare routine doesn't just protect your skin — it dramatically improves your tanning results.
Before Your Tanning Session
1. Exfoliate (24–48 Hours Before)
Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin. This is the single most important step for an even, streak-free tan. Use a gentle body scrub or exfoliating mitt and focus on rough areas like elbows, knees, and ankles.
2. Shave or Wax Beforehand
Hair removal opens your pores temporarily, so always shave or wax before your session — not after. Shaving after a UV session can strip color and irritate freshly tanned skin.
3. Skip Heavy Moisturizers and Oils
On the day of your session, avoid thick creams, oils, and perfumes. These can create a barrier that blocks UV rays or causes uneven color with spray tans. A light, water-based moisturizer is fine.
4. Use a Tanning Accelerator Lotion
Quality indoor tanning lotions are formulated to boost melanin production, hydrate skin, and extend the life of your tan. Ask our team at MAAC on Main which formula is right for your skin type.
During Your Session
- Always wear eye protection — UV rays penetrate eyelids and can cause serious eye damage over time.
- Use lip balm with SPF — lips have very little melanin and burn easily.
- Protect sensitive areas — consider covering areas that don't need color or are prone to burning.
- Don't exceed recommended session times — more time does not equal more color. It equals more risk.
After Your Tanning Session
Moisturize Immediately
UV exposure dehydrates skin. Apply a rich, tan-extending moisturizer within an hour of your session. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and hyaluronic acid to lock in hydration and color.
Avoid Hot Showers
Hot water strips your skin's natural oils and fades your tan faster. Opt for lukewarm showers and gentle, sulfate-free body wash to preserve your color.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water. Hydrated skin holds color longer and looks healthier overall. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day, especially in the warmer South Carolina months.
Wait Between Sessions
Allow at least 48 hours between UV tanning sessions. This gives your skin time to fully develop its melanin response and recover properly.
